Moves packaging line back home

ITW moves packaging line back to Denmark with new automated plant

Presentation

Short description

ITW is an international American group, with approx. 48,000 employees worldwide. ITW in Middelfart belongs to the producing part of the group (Construction products). More precisely, it is the production of gun nails, surface treatment of screws, as well as packing of screws and nails.

Previous production

From manual packing to fully automatic solution

In the previous production, after the surface treatment at the factory in Middelfart, the screws were sent abroad, where they were packed.

The entire packaging process was done manually, both erection of the inner and outer box, as well as filling the boxes with screws. They were then packed and sent back for sale in Denmark.

The solution

The new facility

Moving the packaging line to Denmark and at the same time automating the process has made production more efficient, which can be packed faster, at higher capacity and without logistically extensive workflows. With varying order sizes, it is faster to reorganize production, as the entire process takes place mechanically at the factory in Denmark and does not have to be sent abroad to be packed.

ITW wanted the production moved to Denmark for several reasons. One of the main reasons being delivery security and the flexibility of having the entire packaging line locally. Another factor was economy. The return on investment for the packaging line is lucrative, even though its competing with low foreign wages on packing and transport back and forth to Denmark.

Result and customer satisfaction

Results of the new plant

Efficiency - Can be packed faster, at higher capacity and without logistically extensive workflows.

Delivery security - By moving the packaging line to Denmark, production becomes more flexible, and it is quick and easy to adjust to a higher or lower capacity, as the process is performed mechanically.

Fast payback time - The return on investment for the packaging line is lucrative, even though it is competing with low foreign wages on packing and transport back and forth to Denmark.

Customer satisfaction

ITW did not need a standard solution, but a solution specially designed for a specific type of newly designed boxes.

ITW has been very satisfied with the process and the development of the right customized solution. A task that required great flexibility and drive to be able to solve the challenges and changes that arose during the project.

Functional description

Functional description

In the first part of the packaging line, the inner box is erected by a Spizte carton former, after which the box enters the filling machine. When the box is filled, it is transported on a conveyor belt and shaken to flatten the screws in the box. It is transported to a sensor detecting irregularities. If the sensor detects any faults, the box is pushed out of production line, and onto a separate belt, where the operator can fix the issue and put the box back into production.

Along with raising the inner box, the outer box is also raised by a Spizte carton former. The outer box now enters the special designed machine from Sealing System, where it is spot glued on the inside.

The box filled with screws also enters the Sealing System machine, which pushes the inner box into the outer box. After the two parts has been glued together, the box continues and is labeled before being palletized.
